Summary
Lee Everett may or may not be a murderer but he is given a second chance due to the zombie apocalypse. As you fight for survival you will have to make choices in order to make friends and enemies along the way. Remember some decisions could mean certain death for some. So choose your actions wisely because you never know who you will need on your side.
Expectations
This was developed by Telltale games (Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, and many other good series ). For those of you have not played a Telltale game this might mean nothing but to me I was worried. One thing that makes me worried was there was very little press about the game and when that happens the developers are just hoping word of mouth makes this work. Another issue I have is that the Jurassic Park game was complete shit. The other games they have developed were pretty good and worth the time and money. So yes there are doubts here but due to this game being based off the comic and not the TV show does intrigue me.
The Review
Telltale developed this game completely different from their other games and believe me this isn’t a bad thing either. You can back track in certain conversations with some people but not all of them. As soon as the game starts you play a black man sitting in the back of a police car going down a highway. If you don’t pay attention you will miss out on saying certain things to the characters. You can be positive, neutral, or a complete jerk. Since you can’t go back to every conversation you have to pick a choice fast because there is a timer. Just like in a real zombie apocalypse if you don’t decide fast you could make a wrong choice or piss another character off who you might need later.
There will come a time when you have to make a decision on people to save and you have to decide if it is the right choice or not. Most of my choices in the game when it came to doing something important was simple because I thought if I was in this situation what would I do. Most of my choices were good but some of them my companions thought me to be cold hearted. Oh well that is what happens when zombies are banging down the door. Sometimes the living has to die and sometimes a man needs a woman. Telltale has informed people that the decisions you make in the first episode will reflect in the next few episodes. So naturally be cautious of what you pick and remember you can have more than one save spot. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to save more than once and play around with important decisions to see what would be the best one.
Killing zombies should be fun right, right? Well get ready because this is fun but not a full on Left 4 Dead zombie killing spree. For those of you unaware of the comic books the characters are not always being stalked by zombies and killing zombies in every issue. The comics are more about character creation just like the game. So anyway lets get into the kills. You’re first kill is fun naturally because you get to shoot a zombie in the head causing a split head to happen. On the other hand you are not always carrying a weapon with you that is loud and after all why would you want to attract more flesh eaters in your direction. Further into the story you start to use melee weapons such as a hammer or a screw driver. The screw driver kills are awesome. You wont be disappointed. There is even a sneaking mission where you have to rescue someone. One wrong move and you could attract all the zombies but if you do this right you can kill each zombie in a different way that is enjoyable.
I am glad that Telltale decided to use the cell shading to help give this more of a comic look. After all it worked for Borderlands and it works very well here too. On top of all of the cell shading the violence in the game looks beautiful. The exploding heads look great and when a character is bitten it feels like you are watching the show when someone is eaten. The camera does have an issue to where it does jerk away or a character becomes lost on screen. Overall the game looks great and the flaws that are there can be overlooked.
As you can tell this isn’t like past reviews where I inform you the good and the bad. This game is good and I hope Telltale keeps it up. They do need to work on a few things though that I did find questionable. For instance I know our character hurt his leg but regardless there is no way a man would be that clumsy to where he wouldn’t watch where he steps. In the first forty minutes I kept yelling at the TV saying really did you not think you would slip on blood or can you not watch where you are walking. The script and audio is good but do you expect me to believe that a grown adult television reporter would be unaware that a ten year old radio would need batteries. I may be stupid but I'm not that stupid. The puzzles are just mediocre but that isn’t bad nor is it good. I am glad that there is nothing challenging because it’s a zombie game which means your enemy isn’t intelligent at all. The matter of thinking on puzzles is very little which might upset some adventure gamers but I was glad there was nothing too difficult.
Overall Thoughts
The game is about ninety minutes long and is available on XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 for $5 or if you have a PC you can buy it on Steam. I highly recommend this to fans of zombie stories and if you have never read any of the Walking Dead comics I suggest you pick this up and then go to Amazon and buy the hardback editions of the comics. Right before I posted this I found out that the game has already sold one million copies in the past three weeks. So yeah if you haven't bought it yet what is wrong with you?
